There are several points of interest on the dramatic South Taranaki coastline between Ōhawe and Waihi beaches. For your safety, please ensure you do this walk two hours either side of low tide

The Waingongoro River mouth is where Taranaki’s first Māori settlers lived in small undefended settlements. A fortified pā was built where the carpark is now located, though later removed. In the cliffs along the coastline, look out for 3-million-year-old soft papa rock and nearby rock pools, which contain a wide range of sea life. Near Ōhawe Beach you’ll also see the Rangatapu Marae and remnants of a pioneer tram rail.
