He angitūtanga | About the role

Join DOC's marine reserves to provide the highest form of marine protection in Aotearoa, producing spectacular opportunities for marine life to thrive in the absence of exploitation and development.

As Ranger Marine Reserves you will be responsible for the implementation of the Marine Reserve Compliance Plan and the Marine Reserve Monitoring Plan within the District. You will plan and authorise technical work programmes in our marine reserves and conduct compliance and monitoring of our two marine reserves, Tapuae and Parininihi.

Be an advocate for marine reserves, working in true partnership with local iwi/hapū/whānau to ensure our Treaty Partners are engaged with and informed about marine reserve health.

The position will be focussed on:

working with key external partners including iwi, hapū and whānau, landowners, contractors, volunteer groups and other members of the community as well as internal stakeholders at DOC.
maintaining and reviewing marine reserve signage, interpretations material and other marine reserve infrastructure.
conducting marine reserve compliance as a trained Warranted Officer for DOC
responding to and investigating suspected breaches of the Marine Reserves Act 1971, assist with terrestrial compliance investigations
monitoring and practical field work
supporting stakeholders to conduct research or apply Mātauranga Māori, gather and report on collected data, deploy camera equipment from vessels, take water samples and diver surveys. You will be supported by technical advisors and other members of the local marine team.
Travel is an essential part of this role. You will be required to travel to different locations to undertake other regional work

Successful implementation of your work programme will depend upon your ability to establish and sustain strong relationships with external and internal stakeholders. You will also be resilient, comfortable dealing with difficult people and confrontation.

We are looking for a responsible and reliable team player who is willing to work flexibly to get the job done. The ideal candidate has the following skills and attributes:

Experience operating or working on vessels offshore, comfortable working a full working day at sea (training towards a Skippers ticket can be provided).
Passionate about marine ecology, conservation and knowledge of commercial and/or recreational fishing practices.
Understanding of Te Ao Māori principles and strong commitment to being an honourable Treaty partner.
Experience planning, delivery and reporting of operational projects and effectively managing multiple pieces of work.
Previous experience working in an enforcement/compliance and/or marine monitoring environment.
Proven experience of successfully working with a wide range of key internal and external stakeholders.
Full New Zealand driver licence.
Dive Master certification.
Desirable:

A tertiary qualification in biological science, preferably marine science, or relevant industry experience.
Skipper Restricted Limits (SRL) qualification or deck / engineering certification with at least 200 hours logged on commercial vessels. in the last five years with a willingness to obtain SRL certification.
Experience working with iwi, hapū and whānau.
Please note: This position requires the ability to work outside of normal hours (including weekends) and travel as required. You will also be required to pass a security check.

The Regional Operations Group is responsible for delivering conservation work on the ground through our biodiversity, recreation/historic, community engagement, iwi partners and visitor centre teams.

The Taranaki Team are a close-knit, empathetic group that have each other's backs and love a bit of banter. They prioritise the development and upskilling of their team and support other districts with their boating and diving programs.

The salary range for this position is $68,535 - $86,423 with the starting salary of the successful applicant being based on their relevant skills and experience.
